This rural district in the Lüneburger Heide is one of the very sparsely populated areas in Lower Saxony. About one third of the population of the district lives in the Hanseatic City of Uelzen. Agriculture, in particular potato and sugar beet growing, plays an important role in the rural district, which is part of the Hamburg metropolitan region. In addition, the food industry, tourism and health are major employers. The Suderburg campus of Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences is one of Germany’s smallest university institutions. The population of the district is expected to decline markedly by 2030.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

E-bus fleet in Uelzen

The EU is supporting the procurement of an e-bus fleet for urban transport in Uelzen with a subsidy of EUR 3.9 million. The existing fleet of diesel buses will be replaced with seven electric buses. The new vehicles are to be powered exclusively by green electricity. This corresponds to a reduction in CO2 emissions of around 410 tonnes per year.

Young People's Workshop in Uelzen

The European Social Fund (ESF) is supporting the Woltersburger Mühle Young People's Workshop in Uelzen, which promotes the social integration of young people with special needs. The aim is to make it easier for those who attend it to enter the labour market.

Refurbishment of the open air pool in Stadensen

As one of the 41 LEADER regions in Lower Saxony, the heathland region of Uelzen received approximately EUR 2.4 million from 2014 to 2020, to be used in accordance with the local population's wishes. This was used, inter alia, to finance the refurbishment of the open air pool in Stadensen, to render it more attractive and provide barrier-free sanitary facilities.

Ue-Health Network

Through the Ue-Health Network, the EU supports the digital interconnection of doctors, nursing services and pharmacists in the district of Uelzen. The aim is to allow medical care suppliers to exchange patient data while adhering to strict standards of data and patient protection, making the district of Uelzen a pioneer in digital healthcare. The project is supported by the EU to the tune of EUR 165 000.
