Nature is never far away in the district of Holzminden, where half of the land surface is wooded and the Solling-Vogler Natural Park, with its cliffs and moorland, affords plenty of space for leisure pursuits. With approximately 71 000 inhabitants, Holzminden is one of the most sparsely populated districts in Lower Saxony. The chemicals, glass and electrical sectors are represented in the economy of the district, and Holzminden town, the administrative centre, is known far beyond Germany’s borders as a leading location for the manufacture of fragrances and flavourings. The famous fictional fibber Baron Münchhausen, based on a real member of the local gentry, is commemorated in the town of Bodenwerder.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
Playground Ritterspornanger in Stadtoldendorf
Through the Leader programme, the EU is involving local people in rural development projects. The EU contributed over EUR 49 000 for the construction of a climbing tower, slide and other equipment for the playground at Ritterspornanger in Stadtoldendorf.
Green city centre Holzminden
The town of Holzminden received around EUR 67 000 in EU funding – 90% of the required sum – for the greening of the town centre with new trees and hanging baskets in the pedestrian zone. A new ground covering is also intended to improve the usability of the area between the Weser embankment and the bridge and increase its resistance to floods.
Broadband expansion in the commercial area Bodenwerder
Holzminden district has been expanding broadband coverage over the past 15 years with funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the European Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD). For example, between 2017 and 2020, around EUR 36 000 of ERDF funding was allocated to the extension of the glass fibre network in the Bodenwerder industrial estate.
Increase in attractiveness downtown Stadtoldendorf
New play and recreation areas are intended to make Stadtoldendorf town centre more attractive. The town received EU funding of around EUR 175 000 for the associated redevelopment of a plot of land on Stiftstraße.
Rewetting of the hill moor in the forest town of Wildenkiel
Through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the EU is promoting environmental measures to reduce greenhouse gases. For example, around EUR 600 000 in EU funds were invested in the restoration of 70 hectares of peatland by Wildenkiel as part of a large nature conservation project in Solling.
