Pied Piper Fountain in Hamelin, Weserbergland

The legend of the Pied Piper of Hamelin is one of the local claims to fame connecting this part of the Weser Uplands and the wider world. It is based on an old Hamelin tale. Thanks to the salt and thermal springs, which contain sulphur and carbon dioxide, a long-standing spa tradition has been established around Bad Pyrmont and other resorts in the district; Recreation, health, and tourism, in addition to commerce and crafts, are major economic factors. The architecture in the Weser Renaissance style and the popular Weser Cycle Route also attract many visitors.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Renovation of the bridge wall at Coppenbrügge Castle

Under the LEADER programme, the European Union promotes local ideas for regional development. For example, EU funding of EUR 20 000 was allocated to the renovation of the bridge wall at Coppenbrügge Castle, a measure aimed at enhancing the structure dating back to the 13th century.

Salzhemmendorf youth workshop project

The Youth Workshop Salzhemmendorf launched a project to help young people achieve stability, obtain qualifications, and integrate socially. This, together with the underlying socio-educational support, was made possible through EU co-financing of more than EUR 260 000.

Expansion and maintenance of commercial areas in Coppenbrügge

The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) contributed approximately EUR 66 000 towards the connection of four industrial estates in Coppenbrügge to utilities, access points and the inter-regional road network. 

Expansion of Weser cycle path

The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) provided approximately EUR 180 000 – that is half of the amount required – for the extension of the Weser cycle route between the districts of ‘Wehrbergen’ and ‘Wehrberger Wald’ in Hameln.
