Diepholz district, to the south of Bremen, extends over an area of just under 2 000 km². Because of its proximity to Bremen, it is regarded as an attractive place to live for commuters. The district is more densely populated in the north, becoming more rural in character with increasing distance from Bremen. The landscape here is dominated by nature conservancy areas and moorland. The Diepholz moor depression nature reserve, which includes large parts of the district, is of international significance for bird experts, with more than 30 endangered native breeding-bird species.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
Research laboratory at the Center for Mechatronics and Electrical Engineering
The soon-to-be-completed Centre for Mechatronics and Electrical Engineering (ZME) in Diepholz benefited from almost EUR 800 000 in EU funds to fit out its research laboratory. Here, for example, students have developed a robot designed to help automate production lines.
Youth Workshop Diepholz
At the Diepholz Youth Workshop, young people are given careers guidance and prepped for their hunt for the right job or training course. Between 2015 and 2022, the initiative was granted more than EUR 600 000 in support from the European Social Fund (ESF).
Dümmer Nature Park
Dümmer Nature Park is the place where nature conservation and relaxation meet. The EU has provided support for many measures around the park, such as the installation of barrier-free facilities. Most recently, in 2022, a project was wrapped up to enhance the educational experience on offer at the park; for example, it put together the family trail ‘The magic of cranes’. The EU provided almost EUR 90 000 for this project too.
renaturation measures
Various rewilding measures are being carried out in the district of Diepholz in order to stop the destruction of the moor depression and protect rare species of plants and birds. With its contribution of over EUR 500 00o, the EU is financing half the costs of a project whose goal is the sustainable management of water resources, minimising the effects of natural disasters and improving water quality.
