Diepholz district, to the south of Bremen, extends over an area of just under 2 000 km². Because of its proximity to Bremen, it is regarded as an attractive place to live for commuters. The district is more densely populated in the north, becoming more rural in character with increasing distance from Bremen. The landscape here is dominated by nature conservancy areas and moorland. The Diepholz moor depression nature reserve, which includes large parts of the district, is of international significance for bird experts, with more than 30 endangered native breeding-bird species.
