Ludwigslust-Parchim is the second largest district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (and Germany) in terms of service area, and borders three other German federal states. Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony and Brandenburg. Conveniently situated between Schwerin – the capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania – Berlin, and Hamburg – the entire Ludwigslust-Parchim district has been part of the Hamburg metropolitan region since March 2017. Alongside tourism, the food industry is a major employer in the region. There are many lakes and nature reserves in Ludwigslust-Parchim.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
Neugestaltung des Bahnhofsplatzes in Ludwigslust
The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is covering 75 % of the EUR 3.14 million in estimated costs to redevelop the station square in Ludwigslust and build a new bus station close to the train station. The bus stops are to be barrier-free and the commuter car park is to be extended.
ecultivation of the old Wanzlitz landfill
The former Wanzlitz landfill, between Grabow and Wanzlitz, has been stabilised and recultivated with the aid of resources from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). Out of action since 1996, the Wanzlitz municipal waste landfill was impairing water quality in the surrounding area. The EU contributed a total of some EUR 2.1 million to the measure, which is ultimately helping to bring down the amount of landfill gas released into the atmosphere.
Section of the supra-regional “Mecklenburg Lakes Cycle Path”
A 3 km-long cycle path has been built along Kreisstraße 120, between Parchim and Möderitz. The project – part of the cross-regional ‘Mecklenburg Lakes Cycle Route’ – received some EUR 1.7 million in support from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
Old town revitalization Boizenburg/Elbe
The European Social Fund (ESF) co-financed the ‘regeneration of Boizenburg Old Town’ to the tune of EUR 50 000. The goal of the project was to inject life into the Old Town while maintaining functional diversity.
