With its population of some 100 000 residents, state capital Schwerin is the second largest city in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The state parliament sits in the former grand-ducal Schwerin Castle, which is located on an island in Lake Schwerin. Schwerin is surrounded by a number of lakes and the old town boasts impressive 19th century architecture. Mechanical engineering and metal construction are the mainstays of the local economy.

ecolea International School Schwerin
The Erasmus+ programme has granted the ecolea international school in Schwerin around EUR 650 000. In 2022, the school was awarded an Erasmus+ quality label. Erasmus + is an EU programme targeting students and trainees, enabling them to study, complete an internship or volunteer abroad.
Youth staring in the quarter — JSQ.0225.19
Youth social work in the city of Schwerin has benefited from repeated financial support from the European Social Fund (ESF). The ‘Jugend stärken im Quartier’ drop-in centre, for example, is aimed primarily at young people playing truant from school and offers them one-on-one support.
Promoting integration in disadvantaged communities in the context of integrated sustainable urban development
The construction of the premises for new school John Brinckman Primary School in Weststadt, Schwerin, was co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), which contributed EUR 14.5 million. The school, which opened its doors in 2020, has capacity for up to 416 children in classes 1 to 4, including pupils with particular visual, auditory or physical/motor needs.
Promoting cultural heritage in the context of integrated sustainable urban development
The renovation of Schwerin’s ‘Wichernsaal’ was funded to the tune of EUR 2.27 million by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). Under the direction of Diakonie MV, the historic hall has been converted into a multipurpose structure for education and events.
