This district, which is the most extensive in Hesse, consists largely of forest and agricultural land. Situated in a sparsely populated region of rolling hills, the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park is home to Germany’s second-largest reservoir, the Edersee. Tourism is one of the mainstays of the local economy. The district contains one of the largest pump-storage power plants in Germany. Korbach is Hesse’s only Hanseatic city and is the district’s administrative, economic and cultural centre. It is home to the Eisenberg, which has the largest gold deposits in Germany.
