The district close to the former border between East and West Germany comprises 20 municipalities with a total of 162 towns and villages. Agricultural land and woodland are predominant features. Owing to its central location in Germany, Hersfeld-Rotenburg is also an important hub for logistics and freight transport. The administrative centre is Bad Hersfeld, which is also known as a festival and spa town. The area, which is also known as ‘Waldhessen’, offers many tourist attractions, such as tours on the ‘Monte Kali’ or walking and cycling paths along the Fulda, and is home to many places associated with the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm.
