The Mittelhessen district comprises 18 towns and municipalities situated in the central uplands between the Lahn valley and the Vogelsberg mountains. Giessen, its largest city, is home to Justus Liebig University and one of the campuses of Mittelhessen University of Applied Sciences. Giessen has the highest population density of students in Germany. The Lahn river valley hiking trail that crosses the area is particularly popular. The countryside around Giessen is characterised by meadow orchards, whose apples are cultivated largely for production of the region’s famous ‘Äbbelwoi’ cider.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Quality hiking trails

With the aid of EU funds from the LEADER programme, the district was able to develop a concept for building quality hiking trails. The goal is to boost the region’s appeal as an area for recreation for both tourists and local residents alike.

Youth Workshop Gießen

The Giessen Youth Workshop is receiving financial support for its projects from the European Social Fund. One thing it does is to offer young people a helping hand as they transition from school to an apprenticeship or job, primarily through the provision of support, advice and careers guidance. 

Research on treatment options for Covid-19

The Medical Faculty at Justus-Liebig University received some EUR 700 000 from the European Regional Development Fund to research treatment options for COVID-19. 

Multigenerational Playground

Under the LEADER programme, the EU provides support for regional initiatives launched by local people. In the Licher neighbourhood of Ober-Bessingen, for example, around EUR 12 000 in financial assistance was used to build a multigenerational playground, whose features include boule alleys.

Improvement of IT equipment at school

Willy Brandt Schule, the district’s vocational college, received around EUR 140 000 from the European Regional Development Fund to upgrade its IT equipment.
