The largest city in the state of Hesse and the birthplace of Goethe, Frankfurt is an important international centre for finance, industry and the service sector. The European Central Bank (ECB), the Bundesbank (German Federal Bank) and the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) all have their head offices there. Frankfurt is also world-famous for its trade fairs, for example the Book Fair and the International Motor Show. Thanks to its central location, its airport and its main-line train station, Frankfurt is one of Europe’s key transport hubs. Aside from its lively museum, theatre and opera scene, the city of Goethe is known for its sports – especially football, ice hockey and basketball.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
Cost-effective and environmentally friendly energy generation in hospital
A natural gas-powered fuel cell in the new building of the Frankfurt Höchst Hospital generates energy in a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way. The technology supplies emergency power, heating and hot water, and is also used to safeguard fire safety in the hospital. The EU covered half of the costs, which amounted to EUR 630 000.
Recovery of phosphorus from sewage sludge
Phosphorus is a rare but critical raw material. A process by which phosphorus is extracted from sewage sludge ash to produce fertiliser has been developed by the Höchst Industrial Park. The EU covered half of the project costs, which amounted to EUR 360 000.
Platform for information on retirement provisions
With the help of EU funding, a ‘Pensions cockpit (‘Rentencockpit’)’ has been set up at the Goethe University Frankfurt’s Department of Economics. The non-commercial platform aims to provide individuals with free and evidence-based information on the three pension pillars. The EU contributed around EUR 480 000 of the total project costs, which amounted to approximately EUR 1 million.
Refurbishment of a former industrial site
The former FIAT site in the Frankfurt district of Griesheim is being converted into a primary and secondary school as well as a day care centre. This will significantly improve the school and day care situation in the district of Griesheim and in the west of Frankfurt as a whole. The EU is covering half of the total costs, which amount to EUR 3 million.
