The fourth largest city in Hessen is a scientific hub and is home to a number of important centres of applied research, as well as the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) and the European Space Operations Centre (ESA/ESOC). Its central location in the Rhine-Main area has helped the city to attract many companies active in the fields of chemistry, pharmaceuticals, engineering and information technology. Darmstadt is regarded as the centre of the Art Nouveau movement (‘Jugendstil’) – the artists’ colony on the Mathildenhöhe, which was founded in 1899 by the Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig, is world-famous.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
Assistance for adults with reading and writing difficulties
The Hessian Economy Training Centre (‘Bildungswerk der Hessischen Wirtschaft’) is receiving financial support from the EU for its work. Between 2023 and 2025, the courses it offers, including their course for adults with literacy difficulties in Darmstadt, will receive around EUR 250 000 in funding from the European Social Fund.
Scientific research into the coronavirus pandemic
The Technical University of Darmstadt is receiving around EUR 2 million in EU funding for various scientific research projects into the COVID-19 pandemic and its effects.
Development of an innovative data processing centre
The GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research received EU funding for the development of ‘Green-IT-Cubes’. This is a particularly powerful scientific data centre, which is also very energy-efficient thanks to an innovative cooling system. The EU is providing EUR 5.5 million in funding for this project.
Help for disadvantaged young people to make the transition from school to work.
The ‘Youth Qualification and Employment’ programme helps disadvantaged young people make the transition from school to work. A concrete examples of this is the BAFF Women’s Cooperation in Darmstadt which receives financial support from the European Social Fund (ESF) for its work. Between 2022 and 2025, the ESF will cover around a third of the total project costs, which amount to around EUR 900 000.
