The urban district of Kaufbeuren in the region of Swabia in Bavaria is often referred to as the ‘gateway to the Allgäu’. It has a historic old town with towers and walls dating back to mediaeval times. Maria Crescentia Höß was a Franciscan nun from Kaufbeuren and a major historical figure who was canonised as Saint Crescentia in 2001 and has made the city a destination for pilgrimages. Kaufbeuren is a major retail centre. The city’s largest neighbourhood, Neugablonz, is home to the renowned ‘Gablonzer Industrie’ handiwork sector, which is best known for costume jewellery but also supplies precision parts and components to the automotive, household appliance and sanitary equipment industries.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
German class at Gustav Leutelt school at Kaufbeuren
The EU has long been contributing to the costs of the all-day German class organised by the Gustav Leutelt School in Kaufbeuren. Between the school years 2016/2017 and 2020/2021, the EU contributed more than EUR 124 000 towards the total costs of just under EUR 242 000.
Practical class at the Jörg Lederer middle school at Kaufbeuren
The EU has been funding the vocational education programme at Jörg-Lederer secondary school in Kaufbeuren for some time. The programme helps young people in their final year of compulsory education to get an apprenticeship or a place on an employability scheme. Between the school years 2015/2016 and 2020/2021, the EU contributed around EUR 190 000 towards the total project costs of EUR 550 000.
Career entry assistance at the state vocational school at Kaufbeuren.
From September 2019 to December 2023, the EU provided some EUR 683 000 to finance the career-entry support programme offered by the state vocational school in Kaufbeuren, for which total project costs amounted to EUR 1.36 million. The programme is aimed at teenagers and young adults with limited language skills who want to improve their chances of getting a job or apprenticeship.
Construction of office and production spaces at the premises of pro-Micron GmbH at Kaufbeuren
From April 2018 to March 2021, the EU provided EUR 661 000 from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) to support the construction of new offices and production areas for the company pro-Micron GmbH in Kaufbeuren. The project had total costs of EUR 3.36 million . Pro-micron develops and builds miniaturised wireless sensor systems used in mechanical engineering and plant construction.
Creation of a local energy network at Kaufbeuren
The EU subsidised the construction of a local heating network in Kaufbeuren. Thanks to the modern heating system, the city can save energy and reduce its CO2 emissions. The EU contributed some EUR 1.9 million towards the total project costs, which were EUR 2.8 million.
