This district in Upper Franconia is characterised by the northern ridge of the Fichtel Mountains, Münchberg Gneiss Plateau, parts of the Frankenwald forest and the Hof Vogtland. Located where the Iron Curtain used to be, it borders the Czech Republic to the east for almost 25 kilometres. Plastics processing and textiles are particularly important for the economy of the district, which has a population of more than 95 000. Hof district has been twinned with Iława county in Poland since 2009 – the first such German-Polish twinning arrangement in Upper Franconia.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
German class at Geschwister-Scholl middle school, Schwarzenbach
The European Social Fund (ESF) provided almost EUR 21 000 to subsidise the creation of German class with socio-educational support at the Geschwister-Scholl secondary school in Schwarzenbach an der Saale, the total cost of which amounted to almost EUR 46 000.
Development of the recreational and tourist area Großer Kornberg
The EU’s LEADER programme provided just under EUR 188 000 to support the development of the Greater Kornberg local recreation and tourism area for year-round use. The new Kornberghaus restaurant opened for business in January 2022.
Digital transformation of small and medium-sized enterprises by means of artificial intelligence
The EU subsidised the ‘Digital transformation of SMEs with artificial intelligence’ (DAMMIT) project, which ran between April 2020 and September 2022. As part of the project, the Institute for Information Systems at the Hof University of Applied Sciences helped medium-sized companies in the district with their digital transformation.
Coaching towards the future, Hofer Land
The ‘Future Coach’ project, led by the Hofer Land adult education centre, tackled the effects and consequences of demographic change in the region. The project received over EUR 85 000 in EU funding from the European Social Fund (ESF).
ZEDTkauf - a village shop for Zedtwitz
The EU’s LEADER programme provided substantial funding for the ‘ZEDTkauf – A village shop for Zedtwitz’ project, which amounted to almost EU 96 000. The village shop is expected to help strengthen the regional economy and safeguard regional services of general interest. It opened on 24 September 2022.
Breeding of freshwater pearl mussels and awareness raising of their value for human beings and nature
The EU’s LEADER funding programme provided almost EUR 7 400 for ‘The value of the freshwater pearl mussel for people and nature’ project, which was implemented by the Bund Naturschutz between February 2019 and February 2021.
