Amberg-Sulzbach is also known as the ‘Ruhr area of the Middle Ages’, and many features hark back to those days, such as the ‘Erzweg’ hiking route, the ‘Bavarian Iron Road’ and the former ‘Maffeischächte’ ore mines. Like other parts of Oberpfalz, the district is situated on the old ‘Golden Road’ trade route linking Nuremberg and Prague. It is home to a large number of protected areas and castles. The district has enjoyed robust development in recent years, with an unemployment rate which is consistently below the already low average in Bavaria.
