The river Danube divides the district in Lower Bavaria into a northern part, the dominant feature of which is the Bavarian Forest, and a southern part, known as the breadbasket of Bavaria, owing to its fertile soil. Agriculture accounts for 8.5% of the workforce in the district, in other words a relatively high share. Bogen is the largest city in the district and is considered the birthplace of the characteristic lozenge pattern in the Bavarian coat of arms. Companies active in the chemical, plastic processing and rubber sectors constitute a major source of employment. The district has also made a name for itself as a ‘bioenergy region’ and, together with the city of Straubing, as a ‘region of renewable raw materials’.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
Construction of a building for a fruit juice production plant
The LEADER-backed project ‘Orchard meadow biodiversity’ in Geiselhöring, for example, supported the construction of a multipurpose building housing a juice extraction plant. A similar project developed a mobile fruit-juice press that enables people to juice their own fruit.
Creation of apprenticeships in Bogen
Resources from the European Social Fund are being used to support the creation) of apprenticeships in the district of Straubing-Bogen. The aim is the lasting integration of young people into the labour market, particularly those not currently in education or training. For example, a Bogen-based construction company is receiving support to train apprentices.
Conversion of a former production hall into an event venue
With the support of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), a former production hall in Mallersdorf-Pfaffenberg has been converted into a cultural and conference centre known as the ‘Haus der Generationen’, in a boost for the municipality’s cultural, social and corporate agenda.
Financial support for village renewal and infrastructure projects
The European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) has awarded some EUR 57 000 to the Municipality of Rattenberg for village regeneration and infrastructure projects.
