The district of Weilheim-Schongau is located in the Bavarian foothills of the Alps on the border with Swabia. The hilly area with its alpine backdrop is characterised by its many lakes and rivers. There are companies operating in a range of industries in the region. It is home to a German Aerospace Centre (DLR) base and the manufacturing plants of a number of large enterprises. In addition to traditional agriculture, tourism also plays an important role. For example, the district is renowned for the Rococo Pilgrimage Church of Wies, which has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and attracts numerous visitors.
