Ebersberg, which belongs to the Munich Metropolitan Region, is one of Germany’s smaller districts, covering just 550 square kilometres. It has a population of around 140 000. With a landscape characterised by expanses of forest and meadows, and recreation areas never far away, it is a place that offers a good quality of life. A strong services sector as well as the manufacturing, farming and forestry industries form the economic backbone of this district. The town of Ebersberg is twinned with Yssingeaux in the French department of Haute-Loire in the Auvergne region.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
Sustainable heating of public buildings
The State Institute for Agriculture (Landesanstalt für Landwirtschaft – LfL) aims to provide as much as possible of as much of its heat supply from renewable energy. In 2020, the LfL therefore built a wood chip plant for the local heating supply at its buildings in Grub (Poing). Used in conjunction with a biogas plant, the new heating system provides sustainable heating for the nearby buildings. The EU contributed around EUR 1.3 million towards the project.
Alpine microgrids for sustainable energy
An energy company from Grafing was a participant in the Alpgrids project between 2019 and 2022. Partners from everywhere in the Alpine region worked together on local, sustainable energy generation through micro-grids with a view to increasing the reliance of the region’s electricity supply to disruptions. The EU allocated a total of EUR 1.6 million towards the project. The aforementioned company from Grafing received around EUR 87 000.
All day school teaching with German language courses
The Grafen-von-Sempt secondary school in Markt Schwaben received some EUR 40 000 per year between 2016 and 2023 for the teaching of a comprehensive all-day curriculum including German classes. Pupils can receive targeted support with lessons individually tailored to suit them. The focus is on improving German language skills so that pupils are able to join mainstream classes.
