A salient feature of Ulm is the juxtaposition of preserved or reconstructed historical buildings and modern architecture. Measuring 162 metres in height, the Gothic minster completed in the 19th century is the tallest church in the world. Ulm enjoys excellent transport links, being served by two motorways and the Paris-Budapest railway line and lying, as it does, on the river Danube. An international Danube festival is held in Ulm every two years with representatives of all the states along the Danube. The city maintains ‘Danube Partnerships’ with several cities in Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania. Since 2008, the European Danube Academy in Ulm has provided a platform for cooperation. In 2007, Ulm received the European Energy Award for its municipal energy concept and was the first major city in Baden-Württemberg to do so.
