Enzkreis, with its 28 towns and municipalities, surrounds the urban district of Pforzheim and is characterised by four distinctive landscapes: the Kraichgau, the Heckengäu, Stromberg and the northern area of the Black Forest. Most of the district lies in the basin of the Enz River and approximately 40% of its land is covered in forest. Most of the companies based here are SMEs in the fields of mechanical engineering, automotive manufacturing, metal processing, medical technology, electronics and precision engineering among others. Enzkreis is home to the former Cistercian Maulbronn Monastery, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since 2007, the district has been twinned with the Hungarian county of Győr-Moson-Sopron (Raab-Wieselburg-Ödenburg).
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
Forest Climate Path on the topic “Impacts on climate change in the forest”
A ForestClimateTrail was opened in Neuhausen-Schellbronn in summer 2023. The trail aims to inform those interested about the effects of climate change on the forest. In addition to information boards, the trail also offers play and picnic facilities. The EU funded the project via the LEADER programme.
Protection of the Maulbronn monastery ponds Aalkistensee and Roßweiher
The Maulbronn monastery ponds Aalkistensee and Roßweiher are part of the Europe-wide network of nature reserves Natura 2000 and are therefore under special protection. They provide a habitat for many rare and endangered aquatic plants, birds, amphibians and insects.
Glass bakery for a master confectioner
Under the LEADER programme, the EU provides support for regional initiatives launched by local people. In the municipality of Wimsheim, a young master confectioner was able to set up a patisserie with a bakery behind large glass windows. She now provides her sweet creations to people in the neighbourhood. She received financial support for her business from the LEADER programme.
Support for unemployed people to get back into the job market
The Gemeinnützige Service- und Integrationsgesellschaft (GSI) in Mühlacker helps unemployed people to get back into the labour market. In cooperation with the Enzkreis job centre, the GSI also supports people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The GSI receives financial support from the European Social Fund.
