With around 57 000 inhabitants, Baden-Baden is the smallest urban district in Baden-Württemberg. Approximately 60 percent of it is forest. In the 19th century, Baden-Baden came to be one of Europe’s best-known spa towns, widely known as the ‘summer capital of Europe’. The Kurhaus and Casino are architectural testaments to its heyday. Today, Baden-Baden is world-renowned as a media centre and a venue for congresses and festivals. Manufacturing and the service sector are mainstays of the economy. Baden-Baden maintains town-twinning arrangements with Menton in France, Moncalieri in Italy and Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) in the Czech Republic, while the partnerships with Yalta in Crimea and Sochi in Russia are currently dormant.
