The vast rural district of Bastogne (1 043 km2) is the least densely populated in the province (less than 50 000 inhabitants) and is home to many farms. The scene of the Battle of the Bulge, the last major German offensive of the Second World War, Bastogne is an important place of remembrance, for Americans in particular. Historical tourism thus contributes a great deal to the local economy. Vielsalm and Houffalize are also major tourist hubs.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Vauxhall (tourisme, centre culturel et espace de coworking)

EU investment is also being channelled into a number of public services, including a rural community centre in Vaux-sur-Sûre. In addition, the Vauxhall building, which was inaugurated in 2021, contains a cultural, community, tourism and heritage centre that also provides for economic activities (co-working spaces).

Creation of a new cultural centre in Bastogne

EU funding has been earmarked for a number of tourism and urban development projects in Bastogne, such as the refurbishment of historic and tourist buildings in the Latin Quarter and the opening of a new cultural centre in the former Seminary, in order to enhance the city centre by offering a wider range of activities.

Historical immersive experience

Present-day Europe is the legacy of a complex history and the EU is helping to remind us that we have a duty to remember it. As part of the European ‘Land of Memory’ cross-border project, visitors to Bois Jacques are able to use a smartphone app to immerse themselves in a virtual combat experience.

Bastogne War Museum

The Province of Luxembourg offers a range of tourism activities, including the Bastogne War Museum, a reference centre on the Second World War. With EU support, it opened a new extension in 2022 for organising national and international temporary exhibitions.
