With its 31 000 inhabitants, the city of Arlon is the most populated city in the province of Luxembourg in Belgium. Its location right on the border of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg has a major impact on the Arlon area, with much of the workforce commuting across the border. As most people travel by car, the cross-border flow causes significant mobility issues.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
Creation of a business center and a scientific micro-park
The European Union supports environmentally friendly production processes and resource efficiency in small and medium businesses. As part of this support, the EU contributed to the creation of a business centre and small science park on the University of Liège’s Arlon environmental science campus to foster cooperation between business, academia and science.
Cross-border health cooperation
The EU supports cross-border cooperation to make it easier to access healthcare, and to address the shortage of health workers. The European Cross-Border Health Observatory in Arlon received funding for a cross-border cooperation project promoting health and patient education in rural areas.
Redevelopment of Rue Paul Reuter and place des Chasseurs Ardennais, Arlon
Arlon’s Rue Paul Reuter and Place des Chasseurs Ardennais have also benefited from EU-funded improvement works.
Revitalisation of Leopold Square and Leopold Park, Arlon
In Arlon, EU funding is helping to make city spaces more enjoyable places to be. The city’s Place Léopold and its adjoining park got a facelift, including improved green spaces and play facilities.
Messancy - realisation of an alternative circuit for slow traffic intended to connect the city center, the leisure area, along the river
In Messancy, the EU helped finance the creation of a slow traffic circuit (for pedestrians, cyclists and persons with reduced mobility) connecting the city centre, Mathelin Park, the recreation area and the Messancy river waterfront. This project also aims to conserve the natural environment.
Soft mobility in the agglomeration of the 3 frontiers - bike/train instead of car
Almost 30% of the province’s active population work in Luxembourg. In order to reduce congestion and encourage sustainable mobility, the EU has helped set up a Belgium-Luxembourg-France cross-border project called ‘soft mobility three borders’ (green lane for pedestrians and cyclists) for the three borders agglomeration (Messancy, Athus, Rodange, Pétange and Longwy).
