The Walloon Brabant province is located in the heart of Belgium. Well connected to Brussels, Flemish Brabant and the rest of Wallonia, it is a major economic and academic hub in French-speaking Belgium. The province has the highest concentration of chemical and pharmaceutical companies in Wallonia and is a region with one of the highest rates of investment in research and development in the EU, amounting to over 11% of its GDP.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Senne, Dyle and Démer basins - improving water quality and flood risk management

The LIFE Belini project was co-financed by the EU, which supplied EUR 9.7 million out of a total EUR 18.1 million between 2017 and 2026. The project ensures water quality and alerts against potential flooding in the densely populated basins of the Demer river, as well as in Walloon Brabant and Hainaut, in the basins of the Dyle and the Senne (which irrigates the regions of Tubize, Rebecq, Braine-le-Comte and Soignies). The Charleroi-Brussels canal is also included in the project.

Construction of a multimodal road at Braine l'Alleud

In Braine l’Alleud, the EU co-financed a multimodal transport hub, providing EUR 6 800 000, or 40% of the total funding. The hub will relieve congestion in the town centre and facilitate access to the Chirec hospital and to the municipality’s business parks and three large schools.

Research material on various aspects of the energy transition and climate for the universities

To purchase materials to research the climate and energy transition, the five universities received EUR 22 400 000 from the European Recovery Fund, which allocated EUR 495 million to the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. UCL received an experimental wind turbine to test the aerodynamics and mechanics of wind turbines, as well as a reactor, to test hydrogen-based fuels, and fuels derived from waste and algae.

Research project ‘BE-SAFE’ - improving the quality of healthcare and the safety of elderly patients

The EU placed UCL in charge of coordinating the BE-SAFE research project. By developing and evaluating a phase-out strategy, this project aims to improve the quality of healthcare and the safety of elderly patients who take benzodiazepines and sedatives as a result of their sleep problems.  The UCL also coordinates the project’s pan-European aspect, which involves three other EU countries and two non-EU countries.

Research project at the Université Catholique de Louvain - ArcticWATCH

The EU funds a number of research projects at the Catholic University of Leuven (UCL), which has its main campus in Louvain-la-Neuve. A UCL researcher and professor received a European research grant for the ArcticWATCH project, to create an integrated early warning system in the event of a rapid loss of Arctic sea ice.
