The small historic town of Diksmuide, together with the municipalities of Houthulst, Koekelare, Kortemark and Lo-Reninge, is a strikingly spacious rural area in highly urbanised Flanders. With some 50 000 inhabitants spread across 25 (village) centres, the district has the lowest population density in the whole of Flanders. In addition to agriculture, it is home to many SMEs in the construction, wholesale and retail sectors. The Yser Towers are an important First World War commemoration centre. Rural tourism is also very popular in this northern part of the Westhoek.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

The 'IJzer and Handzame Valley', a Natura2000 and Birds Directive site

With an area of over 5 000 hectares, the Ijzer and Handzam basins encompass the De Blankaart and Ijzerbroeken Natura 2000 wildlife conservation areas and the surrounding farmland, which provide an important meadow and marsh bird habitat and a wintering area for tens of thousands of waterfowl, in line with the EU Birds Directive.

Irie Vibes Roots Festival reduces its ecological footprint

Climate change requires both a large and small-scale solutions and EU funding is accordingly being earmarked for an number of local micro-projects, such the Irie Vibes Roots Festival in Kortemark in a joint endeavour with a Walloon and French festival organiser to reduce our ecological footprint.

Rural development projects in Kortemark and Vladslo (Diksmuide)

The EU is also helping to fund many rural projects, such as the conversion of a farm in Kortemark, providing it with special facilities for those with disabilities, and subsidies for horse-drawn wagon excursions organised by Huifkar Diksmuide in Vladso.

Guiding vulnerable young people in the region of Diksmuide

Despite very low unemployment levels in the Diksmuide area, vulnerable young people are nevertheless in need of guidance and assistance and EU funding has accordingly been channelled into a project seeking to give them a better foothold on the labour market.

Projects to keep the countryside alive in the region of Diksmuide

The EU is strongly committed to keeping rural areas alive and has accordingly earmarked funding for the provision of youth clubs and social centres in Lo and Woumen, a village core renewal project in Keiem and the construction of affordable quality housing in Diksmuide for people with disabilities and elderly people in difficult financial circumstances.

Training support for Westland employees from Reninge

Lifelong learning is becoming increasingly important and EU funding is accordingly being channelled into training courses organised by SMEs such as Westland Metalworks in Reninge.

The station of Diksmuide as a regional transport hub

As the region has traditionally been underperforming in terms of mobility, EU funding has been earmarked for the development of a regional mobility hub around Diksmuide station, making it possible to choose between different modes of transport and providing easier access for cyclists.
