Of all the Austrian provinces, Tyrol has the longest external border and the smallest permanently settled area, more than half the province being woodland and alpine pasture. With almost 26 million overnight stays in the winter season, the mountainous province is Austria’s number one winter tourism destination. Unemployment is low – not only because of tourism, but also, above all, because of the impact of the construction industry and retail trade. The provincial capital, Innsbruck, is a university, research and industrial centre and is twinned with seven cities, making it well connected globally.
