Administratively, the region consists of the statutory town of Steyr and the political districts of Kirchdorf an der Krems and Steyr-Land. Heavy and light industry, in particular the manufacturing of vehicles and vehicle parts, accounts for 43% of all jobs. The region’s two districts differ greatly in terms of unemployment; Kirchdorf has an unemployment rate of 2.8%, which is 0.6% below the Upper Austrian average, while Steyr’s rate of 5.4% is the state’s highest. The Kalkalpen National Park, which is a Natura-2000 site and in 2017 became the first area in Austria to secure UNESCO world natural heritage status, provides habitats for many different species. It encompasses Austria’s largest protected forest area. The region’s profusion of cultural sites (e.g. medieval monasteries and castles) makes for low-impact tourism.
