The industrial city of Wels, which lies in the Hausruckviertel, is the second largest city in Upper Austria with over 63 000 inhabitants and belongs to one of the most prosperous regions in the country. Wels is also conveniently located near the Voralpenkreuz interchange, which benefits it as a trade fair city and business location. Thanks to the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences, Wels has become a centre of innovative research in recent years.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Wels: Focus on renewable energy and energy efficiency

Wels has made a name for itself in the field of renewable energy and energy efficiency. Many initiatives are supported by the EU: for instance, the annual World Sustainable Energy Days conference and the research projects of the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences in Wels. Financial support is also available for companies looking to take energy saving measures and for thermal housing renovation work.

Welios Science Center

The Welios Science Center in Wels is a ‘hands-on museum’ in the field of science and technology. In addition to museum activities, it organises holiday programmes and workshops for schools. The Welios Science Center was financed by ERDF and Upper Austria state funding.

Promotion of cycling in Wels

Funding from the European Fund for Regional Development (ERDF) made it possible to create a city/region forum bringing together the city of Wels and its surrounding communities. Among other things, this forum is intended to forge closer ties between the city and its hinterland. A project to expand and improve cycle paths and promote cycling in Wels ran until March 2020.

Health tourism in the forest

In the past few years, tourism has gained significance in Upper Austria. The Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences is also involved in the cross-border ‘forest-based health tourism’ project. With funds from the Interreg Austria-Bavaria 2014–2020 programme, the possibility of developing sustainable health tourism in native forests is being studied.

RESINET: Resilience of energy networks

The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) supports a number of research projects carried out by the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences in Wels. The RESINET project aims to improve the resilience of energy grids and increase the share of renewable energy being fed in.
