The Innviertel is named after the river Inn, which forms the border with Bavaria between Passau and Braunau. The river was once an important trade route that brought prosperity to the trading cities. The wealth of that time is still reflected in the magnificent baroque architecture of the larger cities. The old town of Schärding with its colourful facades is a magnet for tourists. The Innviertel comprises the districts of Braunau, Schärding, Ried im Innkreis and Grieskirchen. Scenic features are the marshy lakes near the State border with Salzburg State, the Lower Inn nature reserve and the Kobernausser forest.
