Eastern Styria, with a population of around 266 000, comprises the two districts of Weiz and Hartberg-Furstenfeld. It is famous for its regional specialities such as pumpkin seed oil or fine brandies. Thermenland, Apfelland-Stubenbergsee and the Almenland wildlife park are all popular tourist destinations. While it has little unemployment, wages are also low.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
Job placement by Hausmasters Dienstleistungs-GmbH
The Chance B social service provider in Gleisdorf caters for people with disabilities. The services provided by its Hausmasters Dienstleistung-GmbH are intended to assist jobseekers that are furthest removed from the labour market. Between May 2019 and August 2022, 33 participants were registered. The project is also supported by the European Social Fund (ESF).
Co-working in Almenland and Weiz-Gleisdorf regions
The EU LEADER programme is also funding a needs assessment project for co-working spaces in 13 municipalities in the Almenland and the Weiz-Gleisdorf energy complex. Steps are already being taken in this direction in Weiz and Gleisdorf with the purchase of the first shared office space.
Sustainable conservation of the Raabklamm
In 2022, six municipalities jointly launched an EU-funded project for the sustainable conservation of the Raabklamm, with additional entry points and snack bars, a new wayfinding system and improvements to the forest nature trail, all of which are supported by the EU LEADER programme.
Plant and animal protection in the Raabklamm gorge
Bordering on the Almenland wildlife park is the Raabklamm, the longest single gorge in Austria, a paradise for hikers and nature lovers that has been designated a Natura 2000 conservation area. This 554-hectare natural habitat, with its wealth of flora and fauna, is protected under two EU directives.
Almenland Nature Park
Almenland is Styria’s most recent wildlife park. 12 municipalities and 15 organisations have been working together on its development since 1995. In 2007, it was designated as the best EU LEADER project in Austria and has been receiving funding for many years. The Passail adventure bay, the Almenland quality herbs and the Vogelbeer panoramic walk are just some of its attractions.
