Lower Carinthia comprises the districts of Wolfsberg and Völkermarkt and a number of municipalities in the Villach-Land and Klagenfurt-Land districts. Less than half of its 3 300 m2 area is permanently settled. In total, around 150 000 people live in Lower Carinthia and with only 45 inhabitants per square kilometre, the region has a low population density. In recent years, the population has declined, in particular in Völkermarkt and Wolfsberg. The majority of workers are employed in small and medium-sized enterprises in the manufacturing or service sectors. Tourism plays an important role in the region, especially in the municipality of St Kanzian on Lake Klopein.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Lower Carinthia broadband initiative

The Lower Carinthia broadband initiative aims to supply households in more than 20 municipalities in the region with the best possible internet connection. In 2021 and 2022, the project, which was co-financed by LEADER, was undergoing the second phase of its implementation. This involved drawing up a development plan to lay the foundations for the highest possible level of coverage. 

Alpe Adria Karawanken

The Slovenia-Austria Interreg programme promotes co-operation in the border regions of both countries. The goal of the ‘Alpe Adria Karawanken’ project is to promote the sustainable development of tourism in this disadvantaged region. Emphasis is placed on hiking, cycling and winter activities. 

Street lighting project in Lower Carinthia

In June 2017, work was completed in seven municipalities in Lower Carinthia to switch 240 light spots proving street lighting and illumination in other locations (including three fortified churches) to LED technology. The EU-funded project, Southern Carinthia ‘LichtGestalten’, was intended to increase energy efficiency and reduce energy costs.

Ferlach 2025

EU funding is being channelled into the Ferlach 2025 project conducted by the municipal authorities in consultation with local residents, with working parties being set up to formulate plans for the regeneration, enhancement and revitalisation of the city centre. In addition, a city centre counsellor has been appointed to coordinate the work.
