The Wiener Umland is the area around Vienna stretching from the Tulln basin to the border with Slovakia. It encompasses the districts of Korneuburg and Tulln and parts of Gänserndorf, Mistelbach and St Pölten in the north and the districts of Bruck an der Leitha and Mödling and part of the district of Baden in the south. Vienna’s affluent commuter belt is a densely populated region and currently has almost 700000 inhabitants. Given the large number of daily commuters, transport services to and from Vienna, the federal capital, are of the utmost importance. While the southern periphery of Vienna is one of Austria’s strongest regions in economic terms thanks to many industrial and commercial businesses, the area to the north of Vienna has a much lower gross regional product. The region is partly agricultural: crops include wine and vegetables and, in the Tullnerfeld, sugar beet. The nearby Wienerwald forest, with its many recreational amenities, the Danube Floodplain National Park and the Morava floodplain are also worthy of mention.
